They are listening.

The other day, I took advantage of the early voting option available here in Texas.  Fox and I drove to a local grocery store to stand in line.

On the way to the polls, he piped up from the backseat, “Mom-mom, are you voting for Bernie Sanders?”.

(He’s got a good memory, this one.)

“No, honey.  Remember how we talked about that election?  He didn’t win, so someone else is running for President now.  I’m voting for her.  Her name is Hillary Clinton.”

“And the other guy is a bad guy.”

(I’ve never talked to him about the bad guy.)

“Yeah.  I don’t think the other guy is a good guy.  I don’t want him to be President.”

“Mom-mom, why is the other guy a bad guy?”

(Thinking cap placed on my head.  Short pause.)

“Well, the other guy doesn’t think about everyone.  He only thinks about the people that are like him.  I want a President who thinks about all the different kinds of people who live here.”

(Short pause from the short one.)

“Mom-mom, why doesn’t he think about everyone?  That’s selfish.”

“You know, honey.  I don’t know exactly why.  Maybe no one taught him about love and that’s sad.  To be a good President, I think you should have love in your heart.  I don’t think he does. ”

“Does the lady have love in her heart?”

“Yep.  I think so. She’s spent a long time doing lots of things for other people – even kids.  So, I’m going to vote for her.”

“Mom-mom, I have love in my heart!”

“You sure do!”

He started to sing.

“When your heart has room for everyone, then your heart is full of love!”

(Mom-mom’s eyes may have welled up.  Maybe.)

We spent the rest of the drive singing that – my very favorite Mister Rogers tune – and pranced into Randall’s to gleefully wait on line.

Even at the tender age of three (and almost a half), he is most certainly listening and formulating thoughts on all kinds of things that I don’t necessarily bring to his attention. They are listening.  Always listening.  What I wish for more than anything else is that on Wednesday morning he wakes in a country that is headed in the direction of love.  He is listening …. and I want him to hear something good.

Then Your Heart is Full of Love

Written by Josie Carey Franz (Lyrics) and Fred Rogers (Music) | © 1984, Fred M. Rogers

When your heart has butterflies inside it,
Then your heart is full of love.
When your heart feels just like overflowing,
Then your heart is full of love.

Love is fragile as your tears.
Love is stronger than your fears.

When your heart can sing another’s gladness,
Then your heart is full of love.
When your heart can cry another’s sadness,
Then your heart is full of love.

Love is fragile as your tears.
Love is stronger than your fears.

When your heart beats for a special someone,
Then your heart is full of love.
When your heart has room for everybody,
Then your heart is full of love.
